Ball cleaning and ball polishing supplies fit into the "necessary" category for billiard clubs, and you might want to consider both for home use. Balls sometimes seem as if they're magnets for oils form hands and dust from the chalk and air. Balls don't react correctly when they're hit if they have stuff on them. Little dabs of hand oils can make you miss shots and doubt your playing ability (plus with clean pool balls your opponent won't have an excuse).
